Progress Over Perfection
Turns out, I’m a lot more competitive than I thought. How do I know? Well, I paid for cell service while leading an expedition in Kenya just to keep my Duolingo streak alive. I used to think I was just learning a new language—but honestly, I’ve learned so much more than just Spanish.
Perfectionism is Overrated
If these 200 days have taught me anything, it’s that perfection isn’t the goal—showing up is. Sometimes, I’ve nailed every lesson, and sometimes leveraging that freeze streak is part of the journey. And you know what? That’s okay. Progress happens in the messiness, not just the victories.
Languages Are Humbling
Learning a new language has a way of keeping you humble. Just when I think I’ve mastered a new phrase, I forget something I thought I already knew. It’s a reminder that growth doesn’t come from getting it all right—it comes from embracing the stumbles and staying committed anyway.
Everything’s Better Together
My favorite part of this journey? Sharing it with my 15-year-old daughter. She “might” 😜 be more competitive than me (I’m beyond impressed that she’s on day 562). There’s something really special about learning and growing alongside someone you love. It’s a reminder that everything is better when you’re not doing it alone. <cue 🎵 Jack Johnson, “Better Together”>
Consistency is Key
200 days may sound like a long time, but it didn’t happen all at once. It was built in small, daily moments that added up over time. Showing up for those lessons, no matter how small, has been a powerful reminder that consistency—not perfection—is what leads to real progress.
Design Matters
I’ve also realized just how important design is. When something looks simple, we expect it to be simple. Duolingo gets that right, which is why it’s so easy to keep coming back. It’s a good reminder that the experience we create—for ourselves and others—matters.
The Spanish Score is My New Obsession
The new Spanish score feature has become my latest obsession. It’s a little nudge that shows me how each lesson connects to my bigger goal: becoming fluent. It’s like seeing the dots connect, and that kind of clarity is motivating. It keeps me grounded in MY WHY behind the daily practice.
What’s Next?
My daughter and I are already planning an immersive language experience in 2026, where we’ll dive even deeper into Spanish. Until then, we’ll keep learning together, one day at a time.
How Am I Celebrating?
To celebrate these 200 days, I’m taking some time to reflect—and heading to my local hot springs to soak in the joy of hitting this milestone. Because sometimes, the best way to mark progress is by slowing down and savoring it. Caliente! 😉
